How to Install Elastimold 273ELR/274ELR Loadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of Elastimold 273ELR (without test point) and 274ELR (with test point) Loadbreak Elbow Connectors on UD cable with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Probe wrench, Wire brush, Crimp tool, Wire strippers, Hotstick (for energized operations and cap removal), Neutral wire crimping tool (if applicable)

Supplies needed:

Elastimold 273ELR or 274ELR Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug (appropriate for cable type, e.g., 02509XXX), Probe, Lubricant (supplied with kit, do not substitute), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire (for neutral connection), Appropriate ground connector (for neutral connection), UD cable (with concentric neutral and extruded insulation shielding), Insulated cap (if removing from bushing)

  1. Ensure De-energized State and Safety Precautions

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of parts. This product should be installed only by competent personnel trained in good safety practices involving high voltage electrical equipment. Failure to follow these instructions will result in damage to the product and serious or fatal injury. Verify the circuit is de-energized using appropriate methods before proceeding.

  2. Inspect Components and Prepare Workspace

Check the contents of the package to ensure all components (Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Wrench, Lubricant) are complete and undamaged. Inspect all components for proper fit with the cable and/or mating products. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace. Read all instructions, have all required tools at hand, and maintain cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  3. Train and Cut Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the documentation to ease operation. For new installations, cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer, and a cut length of 3-1/4 inches.

  4. Prepare Cable End

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 13 inches back from the end of the cable (for 02509XXX compression lugs). Remove 2-1/8 inches of insulation and 9-1/2 inches of shield from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Wire brush the bare aluminum conductors immediately.

  5. Install Compression Lug

Immediately install the compression lug onto the wire-brushed conductor. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so that its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe any excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  6. Remove Insulation Shield and Clean Insulation

Remove 10 inches of the insulation shield as shown in the documentation. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch. Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared surface without cuts or nicks.

  7. Lubricate and Assemble Elbow

Lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied in the kit. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Keep the insulation clean of dirt and grime. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess grease.

  8. Align Elbow and Thread Probe

Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. The probe must turn freely for approximately four turns before becoming snug. Tighten the probe with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  9. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Using a separate copper wire (No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm) or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist it tight, taking care not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires and the wire from the grounding eye together, then connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  10. Connect Elbow to Bushing Plug

LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED. Lubricate the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing with the lubricant supplied. If the bushing has an insulated cap, remove it using a hotstick tool attached to the pulling eye. Securely fasten a hotstick to the loadbreak connector pulling eye. Place the elbow connector receptacle area over the bushing plug, inserting the elbow male contact into the bushing until the first slight resistance is felt. Immediately push the elbow home with a fast, firm, straight motion to engage the internal lock on the elbow and bushing interface. Apply sufficient force to ensure the internal lock engages.
