Overview

ABB Installation Products SKU 02702230 is a 15-35kV, 200 Amp Loadbreak LR Copper Contact designed for medium-voltage applications requiring reliable load interruption and connection. This copper contact accommodates either #1 AWG stranded/compressed or 1/0 AWG solid/compact conductors, providing flexibility in conductor sizing for distribution systems. The loadbreak feature allows for safe, hot-stick operation under load conditions, reducing downtime during maintenance or reconfiguration. The LR (Loadbreak Rated) designation confirms compliance with ANSI C119.4 standards for loadbreak operations up to 200A at rated voltage. Constructed from high-conductivity copper, this contact ensures minimal resistance and heat generation during operation. The design supports both solid and stranded conductors, making it suitable for utility, industrial, and commercial medium-voltage systems where standardized conductor configurations are required. Common applications include pad-mounted switchgear, transformers, and underground distribution systems where loadbreak capability and conductor compatibility are critical. The UNSPSC code 39121409 classifies this as a medium-voltage electrical contact, confirming its role in power distribution infrastructure.

How to Install Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors, including cable preparation, assembly, and connection to a deadbreak bushing or accessory device.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick, Suitable sensing device (for voltage test), Wire strippers

Supplies needed:

Elbow Connector Housing, Compression Lug, Probe, Probe Contact, Lubricant (supplied), Hold-down Bail, UD cable (with concentric neutral and semi-con shielding), No. 14 AWG / 2.5mm copper wire, Appropriate connector (for grounding neutral wires), HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) (if shipping covers are present)

  1. De-energize Apparatus and Inspect Parts

DANGER: All apparatus must be de-energized during installation or removal of part(s). Do not touch or move energized products in the work area. Inspect all parts for damage, rating, and compatibility with mating parts. If supplied with protective shipping cover(s), remove them and replace with appropriate HV insulated cap(s) or connector(s) before submerging or energizing the circuit.

  2. Perform Pre-installation Checks

Ensure the unit will be bailed. Check the contents of the package to ensure they are complete and undamaged. Verify the elbow housing cable entrance size and compression lug size for proper fit with the cable. Check threads by threading the probe into the compression lug; if resistance is encountered, check for damage and replace the component. Read the entire installation instruction before starting and have all required tools at hand, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  3. Train Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  4. Prepare Cable End

Unwrap and bind the concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the end of the cable. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely and taking care not to nick the conductor. Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the cable cut-back template, and bevel the insulation end 1/8 inch (3.2mm) maximum.

  5. Install Compression Lug

Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug. Rotate the lug to spread the inhibitor. Position the compression lug so the contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Refer to the crimp chart packaged with the compression lug for recommended crimp tool information. Start crimping at the crimp line mark, rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the outside of the lug and cable.

  6. Clean Insulation

Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue after preparing the cable and installing the lug.

  7. Lubricate and Slide Elbow Housing

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and the inside of the elbow housing with the lubricant supplied. DO NOT SUBSTITUTE other lubricants, as they may be harmful. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back-and-forth twisting motion. Wipe off all excess silicone lubricant, keeping the insulation clean of dirt and grime.

  8. Thread and Tighten Probe

Align the elbow with the compression lug's threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten the probe with a wrench until the wrench bends, indicating proper torque.

  9. Place Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket, compressing the bail and inserting it into the brackets.

  10. Connect Grounding Wire to Elbow

Using a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire or equivalent, insert one end through the grounding eye on the elbow. Twist tightly, taking care not to damage the eye.

  11. Connect Neutral Wires to Ground

Twist all concentric neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  12. Clean and Lubricate Mating Surfaces

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing. Lubricate these surfaces with the lubricant supplied. LUBRICATE ONLY IF THE TRANSFORMER AND ELBOW ARE KNOWN TO BE DE-ENERGIZED.

  13. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing. DO NOT OPERATE BY HAND. DO NOT SEPARATE IF ENERGIZED.

  14. Secure Elbow with Hold-down Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt in a clockwise direction. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not need readjustment when removing and replacing the elbow.

  15. Perform Voltage Test (Post-installation)

To establish if the circuit is energized, remove the test point cap with a hot stick, peeling it off at an angle. WARNING: The voltage test point is a capacitance device, not directly connected to the conductor. Do not use conventional voltage measuring equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for a suitable sensing device designed for capacitive test points. Contamination or incorrect equipment can cause a false 'no voltage' indication; treat the elbow as energized until confirmed by other means. After testing, clean and lubricate the inside surface of the cap with silicone grease and replace it on the test point.
