How to Install 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Elastimold 252LR Deadbreak Elbow Connectors. It covers cable preparation, elbow assembly, grounding, and connection to a 25kV class deadbreak bushing or accessory device.

Estimated time: 1h 30m

Tools needed:

Wrench, Crimp tool, Wire brush, Hot stick

Supplies needed:

Lubricant, No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) Copper Wire, Grounding Connector

  1. Prepare for Installation and Safety Checks

Before starting, ensure all apparatus are de-energized and do not touch or move energized products. This product must be installed by competent personnel trained in high voltage safety practices. Verify the unit is designed to be bailed. Check package contents, elbow housing cable entrance size, and compression lug size for compatibility. Read all instructions and have tools ready, maintaining cleanliness throughout the procedure.

  2. Train the Cable

Train the UD cable as shown in the diagram to ease operation, ensuring a minimum of 20 inches (508.0mm) beyond the end of the cable pad mount transformer. Cut any excess cable squarely at the center line of the bushing.

  3. Prepare Cable Neutrals and Install Lug

Unwrap and bind concentric neutral wires 8-1/2 inches (216.0mm) back from the cable end. Remove the shield and insulation from the cable end, cutting squarely without nicking the conductor. Wire brush bare aluminum conductors and immediately install the compression lug, rotating to spread inhibitor. Position the compression lug so its contact threaded hole aligns with the bushing bore. Crimp the lug according to the crimp chart, starting at the crimp line mark and rotating 180 degrees for each successive crimp. Carefully wipe excessive inhibitor from the lug and cable.

  4. Prepare Cable Insulation

Remove the semi-con shield as shown in the diagram. Bevel the insulation end a maximum of 1/8 inch (3.2mm). Thoroughly clean the insulation to remove all traces of conductive residue, ensuring a straight, smooth, and squared surface without nicks.

  5. Assemble the Elbow Connector

Clean and lubricate the cable insulation and inside the elbow housing with the supplied lubricant; do not substitute. Slide the elbow connector onto the cable with a back and forth twisting motion, then wipe off all excess silicone lubricant. Align the elbow with the compression lug’s threaded hole. Thread the probe into the lug by hand, taking care not to cross-thread. Tighten with the supplied wrench until the wrench bends.

  6. Install the Hold-down Bail

Place the hold-down bail into the hold-down bracket. Compress the bail and insert it securely into the brackets.

  7. Connect Concentric Neutral Wires

Insert one end of a separate No. 14 AWG (2.5mm) copper wire through the grounding eye on the elbow and twist tightly, ensuring not to damage the eye. Twist all neutral wires together and connect them to ground using an appropriate connector. Provide adequate slack in the wires for elbow operation.

  8. Connect Elbow to Bushing

Clean the receptacle portion of the elbow connector and the mating bushing, and lubricate with the supplied lubricant only if the transformer and elbow are known to be de-energized. Use a fully insulated hot stick to place the elbow onto the bushing; do not operate by hand and do not separate if energized.

  9. Secure the Elbow with Bail

Pull the hold-down bail up over the crown or top of the elbow so that the eyebolt on the bail is directly over the operating eye. Tighten down on the elbow locator by turning the eyebolt clockwise. Adjust the nut on the eyebolt until it allows the eyebolt to seat securely in the locator, acting as a stop to prevent excessive force on the elbow. Once the nut is in its final position, it will not require readjustment for future removal and replacement.
