How to Install and Customize QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray
This guide provides instructions for cutting, bending, and joining sections of QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray to create custom cable management solutions. Learn to form bends, tees, and elbows, and properly support the tray.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC)
Supplies needed:
QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections, Splice Kits (QTPBNWK or QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3 or QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10 or QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90-degree Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT or QTP90TKITBLK)
- Plan the Cable Tray Route and Configuration
Before cutting or assembling, plan the complete cable tray route. Determine required lengths of straight sections and locations for bends, tees, and changes in level. Review the cutting patterns provided in the manual for specific tray sizes and desired configurations (e.g., 90-degree bends, elbows, tees, width reductions).
- Cut Cable Tray Wires for Customization
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to make precise cuts. For any modification (bends, tees, width reductions), identify wires to be removed according to patterns. Start by cutting the top side wire at an angle away from the new end, resting jaws on the cradle wire. Repeat for all remaining side wires, then turn the tray over and cut bottom wires from the underside, ensuring clean cuts.
- Form Bends, Elbows, and Tees
For 90-degree bends, cut specified wires and bend the tray until inside edges meet. For large radius bends, remove outside and bottom wires from every other mesh section and gently pull ends together. For elbows, 90-degree tees, or Y-junctions, cut necessary wires from each tray section per patterns. Secure all formed sections using QTPBNWK Splice Kits and QTPSSW3 Splice Washers, ensuring proper alignment and stability. For Y-junctions, cut universal splice bars to 3 inches and use them with splice kits and washers.
- Reduce Tray Width (Optional)
To reduce tray width, cut the side and bottom wires according to the reduction guides. Connect the uncut side of the trays using a QTPUS10 Universal Splice Bar with fasteners. Bend the cut wires of each tray and secure them with a QTPUS10 Universal Splice Bar on each pair of tray wires.
- Install Cable Tray Supports
Install supports for straight sections at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Place supports within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. The span between supports must not exceed the length of the tray. Provide additional supports around all bends and wherever the cable tray level changes to maintain stability and load capacity.
