How to Cut and Connect QUICK TRAY PRO Cable Tray Sections
This guide provides instructions for safely cutting and joining QUICK TRAY PRO cable tray sections, including the QTP4X12 model, to create custom cable management pathways.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Hoffman Side Action Bolt Cutter
Supplies needed:
QUICK TRAY PRO Cable Tray Sections, Splice Kits (QTPBNWK or QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3 or QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10 or QTPUS10BLK) (as needed)
- Plan Your Cable Tray Layout
Before making any cuts, carefully plan your cable tray configuration. Review the cutting patterns provided in the manual for your specific tray size and desired bends (e.g., 90-degree bends, large radius bends, tees, or width reductions). Identify which wires must be removed for the intended modification.
- Cut Cable Tray Wires
Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter to make precise cuts. Start by positioning the cutting jaws on the cradle wire of the top side wire and cut at an angle away from the new end. Repeat this for all remaining side wires, ensuring clean cuts. Turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside, resting the jaws on the cradle wire and cutting at an angle away from the new end. This method minimizes sharp edges and helps protect against corrosion.
- Form Bends or Reductions
After cutting, form the cable tray into the desired shape. For a 90-degree bend, turn the tray on the uncut side and smoothly bend it until the inside edges meet. For large radius bends, lay the tray flat and pull the ends on the uncut side towards each other. For width reductions, bend the cut wires of each tray section as needed to align with the smaller tray.
- Connect Tray Sections
Join the modified or straight tray sections using Splice Kits (QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK) and Splice Washers (QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK). Align the sections at the desired angle or in a straight line. Fasten the splice kits and washers securely to the sides of the tray, ensuring each splice washer is over two tray bottom wires where applicable, especially for adjustable elbows or tees. For additional support or specific configurations like Y-junctions or width reductions, incorporate Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK) as instructed in the manual.
