How to Install and Customize QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray Systems

This comprehensive guide provides instructions for cutting, bending, joining, and supporting QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to create a tailored cable management system.

Supplies needed:

QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections, Splice Kits (QTPBNWK/QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washers (QTPSSW3/QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10/QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90o Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT/QTP90TKITBLK), Cable tray supports

  1. Plan Your Cable Tray Layout

    Review your desired cable tray configuration and decide which wires must be cut for bends, tees, elbows, or width reductions. Always consult the cutting patterns provided in the manual for your specific tray size and desired modification.

  2. Cut Tray Side Wires

    Using the Hoffman side action bolt cutter, position the cutting jaws on the cradle wire of the top side wire. Make the cut at an angle away from the new end. Repeat this process for all remaining side wires, ensuring clean cuts to minimize sharp edges and protect against corrosion.

  3. Cut Tray Bottom Wires

    Turn the tray over and cut the bottom wires from the underside. Always rest the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cut at an angle away from the new end. Make one clean cut to eliminate grinding or touch-up.

  4. Create 90-Degree Bends

    At the desired bend location, cut all side wires according to the specific cutting pattern for your tray width. Turn the tray on the uncut side and smoothly bend it until the inside edges closest to the uncut side meet. Secure the bend using Splice Kits and Splice Washers as indicated for the tray width.

  5. Form Large Radius Bends

    Remove the wires from the outside and bottom of every other mesh section at the bend location, following the cutting pattern for your tray size. Lay the tray on a flat surface and pull the ends on the uncut side towards each other until the remaining cut sides almost touch at the corners. Fasten the inside of the bends together with Splice Kits and Splice Washers.

  6. Create Elbows

    Cut side wires from two tray sections according to the cutting pattern for the desired elbow angle. Align the wires of the two trays at the desired angle. Fasten the tray sections using two Splice Kits and Splice Washers for each joint. For adjustable angles, use one Splice Kit and one Splice Washer, centered over two tray bottom wires.

  7. Construct 90-Degree Tees

    Cut the side wires from the tray section forming the top of the tee as shown in the cutting guide. Align the wires of the two trays at the desired angle. Fasten the tray sections using two Splice Kits and Splice Washers for each joint. For adjustable angles, use one Splice Kit and one Splice Washer, centered over two tray bottom wires.

  8. Build Y-Junction Tees

    Cut and remove the wires from both tray sections as indicated in the cutting guides for your tray size. Bend the side wires of both sections to a 45-degree angle. Connect the tray sections by forming the Y and using cut Universal Splice Bars (3 inches long) on the side wires. Also, connect the trays with Splice Kits and Splice Washers, using one for 4 and 6-inch trays, two for 8 and 12-inch trays, and three for 16-inch and wider trays.

  9. Reduce Tray Width

    Cut the side and bottom wires as shown in the cutting guides to achieve a four-inch or eight-inch reduction in tray width. Connect the uncut side of the trays using a Universal Splice Bar with fasteners. Bend the cut wires of each tray and secure them with a Universal Splice Bar and fasteners on each pair of tray wires.

  10. Adjust Tray Levels

    Remove every other side wire section at the bend location from both sides of the tray. The number of removed sections determines the radius of the bend. Bend the tray smoothly up or down to navigate around obstructions.

  11. Connect Tray Sections and Secure Joints

    After making any necessary cuts or bends, join straight sections or modified sections using Splice Kits and Splice Washers. Ensure all connections are tight and secure to maintain the structural integrity of the cable tray system.

  12. Install Cable Tray Supports

    Install straight section supports at typical 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Place supports within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections. Ensure the span between supports does not exceed the length of the tray. Add additional supports around bends and where the cable tray level changes to provide adequate stability.
