How to Fabricate and Install a QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray System

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for planning, cutting, bending, connecting, and supporting QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to create a custom cable management system for various applications.

Estimated time: 4h

Tools needed:

Hoffman Side Action Bolt Cutter (QTPBC)

Supplies needed:

QUICK TRAY PRO™ Cable Tray sections (e.g., QTP2X4, QTP4X8), Splice Kit (QTPBNWK or QTPBNWKBLK), Splice Washer (QTPSSW3 or QTPSSW3BLK), Universal Splice Bar (QTPUS10 or QTPUS10BLK), T-Connection or 90o Splice Bar (QTP90TKIT or QTP90TKITBLK), Cable Tray Supports

  1. Plan Your Cable Tray Layout

Determine the required configuration for your cable tray system, including straight runs, bends, elbows, tees, and level changes. Select appropriate QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections and connection components based on your design and the cable fill calculations, ensuring compliance with NEC 392.9 (B) if applicable.

  2. Cut Cable Tray Sections

Use the Hoffman side action bolt cutter (QTPBC) to cut QUICK TRAY PRO™ cable tray sections to the desired lengths and shapes. For bends and connections, carefully review the cutting patterns provided in the manual for your specific tray size and desired configuration. Always rest the cutting jaws on the cradle wire and cut at an angle away from the new end to ensure clean cuts and protect against corrosion. Make one clean cut to avoid grinding or touch-up.

  3. Form Bends and Adjust Levels

To create 90-degree bends, cut the specified side and bottom wires according to the pattern for your tray width, then smoothly bend the tray until the inside edges meet. Secure the bend using Splice Kits (QTPBNWK) and Splice Washers (QTPSSW3). For large radius bends, remove outside and bottom wires from alternating mesh sections and gently pull the ends together. For changes in level, remove alternating side wire sections at the bend location and smoothly bend the tray up or down to go around obstructions.

  4. Connect and Join Tray Sections

Join prepared cable tray sections using appropriate connectors. For straight connections, elbows, and 90-degree tees, align the tray sections and fasten them securely using Splice Kits (QTPBNWK) and Splice Washers (QTPSSW3). For elbows and tees, you may also use Universal Splice Bars (QTPUS10) or T-Connection Splice Bars (QTP90TKIT) for additional support. When creating Y-junction tees, cut both tray sections, bend side wires to 45 degrees, and connect using cut universal connectors, Splice Kits, and Splice Washers. If reducing tray width, cut side and bottom wires, then connect the uncut side with a Universal Splice Bar and secure bent wires with another Universal Splice Bar. Ensure all connections are firm and stable.

  5. Install Supports for the Cable Tray System

Install supports for the cable tray system according to your planned layout. For straight sections, place supports at 6-foot (1.5m) centers. Ensure supports are within 24 inches (610mm) of any splice on straight sections, and the span between supports does not exceed the length of the tray. Provide additional supports around bends and wherever the cable tray level changes to ensure stability and proper load distribution for the cable load.
