How to Install and Configure a Panduit G6 PDU

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the physical installation, grounding, power connection, and initial web-based configuration of Panduit G6 Power Distribution Units (PDUs) in a datacenter rack. Ensure all safety precautions are followed.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Mounting hardware, Tie wraps, Ground bonding cable

  1. Review Safety Information and Prepare for Installation

Before beginning, thoroughly read all safety information in the PDU manual. Ensure that installation is performed by qualified personnel knowledgeable about AC power products. Verify that the PDU is intended for Information Technology Equipment (ITE) loads with linear/Power Factor Corrected (PFC) input current. Gather all required tools and supplies.

  2. Mount the Vertical PDU in the Rack

Install the mounting buttons into the screw holes on the PDU, either on the face opposite the outlets (for outlets facing the center of the rack) or on the sides (for outlets facing the back or front of the rack). Install the PDU by inserting the mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack. Ensure the PDU is securely attached.

  3. Connect the Ground Bonding Cable

Connect a ground bonding cable to the external ground bonding point located on the PDU chassis. Use this point to bond the PDU to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack metalwork, especially if the rack contains conductors for functional grounding. Refer to the manual for minimum bonding conductor requirements based on current rating.

  4. Attach the Input Cord to Universal Input PDUs (if applicable)

If installing a Universal Input PDU, open the input cord connector latches on the PDU. Insert the input cord plug firmly into the connector. Close the input cord connector latches on the PDU to lock the input cord securely into place. Ensure the cord is fully seated before proceeding.

  5. Configure Universal Input PDU Input Type via Web Interface (if applicable)

For Universal Input PDUs, connect to the PDU's Web interface (refer to the User Manual for connection instructions). Navigate to the 'System Management' page under settings. Select 'Set Input Cord' under actions, then choose the correct cord type from the pull-down menu based on your facility's power. Select 'Save' to apply the setting; the PDU will reset. WARNING: Selecting an incorrect input cord type may lead to incorrect metering and power rating display.

  6. Connect the PDU to a Power Source

WARNING: Ensure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. Connect the PDU's input power cord to a grounded electrical outlet with appropriate branch circuit overcurrent protection. Verify that devices connected to the PDU are capable of operating from the same line voltage. Turn the feed circuit breaker to the 'On' position. The OLED screen will display a status bar during loading, then the Main Menu. Switched and Monitored & Switched PDUs will show lights corresponding to powered outlets.

  7. Secure Power Cords with Integrated Retention

For most IEC C13 and C19 outlets, secure connected power cords using the integrated cord retention feature. Plug in the power cord, then slide the end of a provided tie wrap into the notch next to the outlet. Wrap the tie wrap around the cord and secure it firmly to prevent accidental disconnects.
