How to Install and Configure a Panduit G5 Power Distribution Unit (PDU)

This guide provides comprehensive instructions for the physical installation, grounding, power connection, and initial configuration of Panduit G5 Metered, Switched, and Metered & Switched PDUs in a datacenter rack. Ensure all safety precautions are followed during the process.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Phillips screwdriver, Torx screwdriver, USB Drive (for firmware upgrade)

Supplies needed:

Mounting buttons (for vertical PDU), Tie wraps (for cord retention), Cage nuts (for 1U/2U PDU mounting), Ground bonding cable, Mounting screws

  1. Review Safety Information

Before beginning installation, thoroughly read and understand all important safety information and regulatory compliance notices provided in the manual. Ensure the PDU is connected only to Information Technology Equipment (ITE) loads with linear/Power Factor Corrected (PFC) input current. Verify that a reliable grounded connection is established before connecting to AC power to reduce the risk of electric shock due to high leakage currents. Disconnect the power cord to isolate this equipment.

  2. Install PDU Mounting Hardware

For vertical PDUs, align and install the mounting buttons with the screw holes on either the face opposite the outlets (for outlets facing the center of the rack) or on the sides of the PDU (for outlets facing the back or front of the rack). For 1U/2U PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location in the rack.

  3. Mount the PDU to the Rack

For vertical PDUs, insert the installed mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack. For 1U/2U PDUs, screw the mounting bracket ears into the RETMA rail surface at the U location where the cage nuts were installed. Ensure the PDU is securely fastened and level.

  4. Ground the PDU

Connect a ground bonding cable to the external ground bonding point located on the PDU chassis. Bond the PDU to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack metalwork using the provided external earthing screw and star washer. Refer to the manual for minimum bonding conductor requirements based on current rating.

  5. Attach Input Cord to Universal Input Connector (if applicable)

If using a Universal Input PDU, ensure the facility side connector is disconnected. Open the input cord connector latches on the PDU. Insert the input cord plug fully into the connector. Close the input cord connector latches on the PDU to securely lock the input cord into place.

  6. Connect the PDU to a Power Source

WARNING: Ensure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. Turn the feed circuit breaker Off. Ensure all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to On. Connect each PDU to an appropriately rated branch circuit, ensuring the PDU power cord has sufficient length. Turn the feed circuit breaker On. The OLED screen will display a status bar during loading, then the Main Menu.

  7. Configure Universal Input PDU Input Type (if applicable)

For Universal Input PDUs, connect to the PDU's Web interface (refer to the User Manual). Navigate to the 'System Management' page under settings. Select 'Set Input Cord' under actions. Choose the correct cord type from the pull-down menu based on your input cord part number. Select 'Save'; the PDU will reset. Incorrect selection may lead to inaccurate metering.

  8. Secure Power Cords (Optional)

To prevent accidental disconnects, plug in the power cord to the desired outlet. Using the provided tie wraps, slide one end into the notch on the PDU next to the outlet and wrap it around the cord. Secure the tie wrap firmly. Note that Dual Sided PDU models do not include this feature but are locking cord compatible.
