How to Install Copper Compression Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing copper compression connectors, including crimping and heat shrinking for insulation.

Crimping tool, Wire strippers, Heat gun or propane torch, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Copper compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing, Wire

  1. Prepare the wire

    Strip the wire insulation to the appropriate length as indicated on the tool chart. Ensure not to nick or damage the conductor strands.

  2. Insert wire into connector

    Insert the stripped wire into the copper compression connector until it reaches the stop. Ensure a secure fit.

  3. Crimp the connector

    Select the appropriate crimp die based on the connector type and wire size. Crimp the connector by placing the first crimp near the tongue of the lug and subsequent crimps towards the wire entry, evenly spacing them using the barrel stripes as a guide.

  4. Inspect the crimp

    After crimping, inspect the connector for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any if present.

  5. Prepare heat shrink tubing

    Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for at least 1.5 inches of overlap on the wire insulation.

  6. Apply heat shrink

    Using a heat gun or propane torch, shrink the tubing starting from the crimped portion of the connector and moving towards the insulated wire. Ensure that adhesive flow at the ends indicates that shrinkage is complete.
