Supplies needed:
HST Thick Wall Heat Shrink Tubing, In-line splice connector or Lug connector, Cable
- Determine the required tubing length
Calculate the minimum tube length. This is the sum of the splice length (or conductor strip length for lug connectors) from the manufacturer and the minimum overlap length (2 inches).
- Prepare the cable
Clean the cable surface that will be covered by the tube. Lightly sanding the surface is recommended. Remove the cable insulation to the length specified by the connector manufacturer.
- Position the heat shrink tubing
Place the HST tubing over the cable. For in-line splices, center the tube over the splice. For lug connectors, position the tube against the lug tongue.
- Preheat the cable
Preheat the cable insulation where it will contact the tube. This helps ensure a proper seal during the shrinking process.
- Shrink the tubing
Using a broad, soft flame from a heat gun or torch (minimum recommended temperature 248°F / 120°C), shrink the tubing. Start in the center and work towards the ends for in-line splices, or from the lug end towards the opposite end for lug connectors. Move the heat source continuously to avoid scorching. The shrink is complete when adhesive oozes from between the tube and the cable/lug.
