How to Install the FPF1-V Fiber Polishing Film

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and using the FPF1-V fiber polishing film for optimal fiber optic termination.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

Screwdriver, Tweezers, Carbide Scribe, Heat Shrink Curing Tool

Supplies needed:

FPF1-V Polishing Film, FJPXY Anaerobic Adhesive, FJPMR Primer, Distilled Water, Heat Shrink Tubing

  1. Prepare Adhesive and Primer

Remove the plunger from a syringe and squeeze about 0.5ml of FJPXY Anaerobic Adhesive into the back of the syringe barrel. Insert the plunger, point the opening upward, and squeeze any air out of the barrel.

  2. Strip the Fiber

Using the buffer stripper tool, carefully strip the buffer from the fiber, exposing the bare fiber. Ensure to remove no more than 1/4" (6.4mm) of buffer at a time to avoid breaking the fiber.

  3. Attach Ferrule to Fiber

Clean the bare fiber with an alcohol-soaked lint-free wipe. Apply primer onto the bare fiber and the first 1/8" (3.2mm) of the buffer. Insert the fiber into the ferrule assembly and apply adhesive, ensuring the fiber is fully inserted.

  4. Cleave the Fiber

Using a carbide scribe, gently score the fiber just above the endface of the ferrule. Pull the fiber away from the ferrule and discard the stub.

  5. Polish the Fiber

Hold a piece of 5μm Aluminum Oxide polishing film and rub the cleaved fiber stub against it in a circular motion until even with the ferrule. Clean the polishing puck and place a sheet of 1μm diamond polishing film on the pad.

  6. Inspect and Finalize

Inspect the fiber endface using a microscope. If scratches remain, polish for an additional 1-2 figure eights on the 1μm diamond film and reinspect. Place a dust cap over the ferrule assembly.

  7. Cure Heat Shrink Tubing

Turn on the heat shrink curing tool and hold the connector in the hot air stream for 20-30 seconds to cure the heat shrink tubing onto the jacket.

  8. Assemble Connector and Boot

Slide the boot over the crimp sleeve and onto the backbone, pushing it until it snaps in place against the flange.

  9. Attach Duplex Clip

Insert the connector into one side of the duplex clip, ensuring the upper tab slides into the pocket underneath the latch. Repeat for the other connector.
