This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing and installing fiber optic indoor tight-buffered cables, including sheath removal and fiber preparation.

Supplies needed:
Ripcord, Vinyl electrical tape, Strength member yarns
- Prepare the cable
Using a sheath knife, ring the circumference of the cable jacket at the designated distance (typically six to eight inches from the end). Gently flex the cable at the cut to separate and remove the outer jacket.
- Expose the fibers
Carefully separate the strength member yarns from the core and cut them to the length specified by local practices. This will expose the tight-buffered fibers for further preparation.
- Strip the tight-buffered coating
Using an approved stripping tool, score the 900μm diameter tight-buffered coating without touching the 125μm diameter fiber. Remove two inches or less at a time while holding the fiber under tension to avoid damage.
