When can splice-on connectors be used?
Splice-on connectors can be used for initial fiber link installation, MAC work, or repairs to existing links.
Do these connectors use index-matching gel?
No, these connectors feature factory pre-polished end-faces and do not require index-matching gel.
How long does it take to terminate a connector?
LC and SC splice-on connectors for 250μm and 900μm cable can be terminated in under two minutes per connector.
What is the typical return loss for these connectors?
Singlemode fiber return loss is > 55dB (UPC) or > 65dB (APC). Multimode fiber return loss is > 30dB (UPC).
What is the typical insertion loss for these connectors?
Singlemode fiber has an average insertion loss of 0.15dB (max 0.30dB). Multimode fiber has an average of 0.10dB (max 0.25dB).
What type of ferrule is used in these connectors?
The connectors use a factory polished zirconia ceramic ferrule.
What fiber sizes can these connectors terminate?
These connectors can terminate 250μm coated fiber or 900μm tight buffered fiber.
What fiber types are compatible with these connectors?
The connectors are compatible with 9/125μm Singlemode (OS1/OS2) and 50/125 Multimode (OM2, OM3, OM4) fibers.
What splice units are compatible with these connectors?
These splice-on connectors are compatible with Sumitomo brand splice units.
What is the operating temperature range?
The functional temperature range for these connectors is from -40°C to 75°C.
How to Install the Panduit Fusion-Splice Connectors
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing Panduit fusion-splice connectors using compatible splice machines.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
Screwdriver, Fiber cleaver, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Fusion splice connectors, Splice protection sleeves, Lint-free wipes, Fiber cleaning solution
- Prepare the splice machine
Follow the initiation steps specific to your splice machine, including powering up, performing arc tests, and ensuring the machine is clean and maintained.
- Strip the fiber
Strip approximately 35mm of buffer and acrylate off the fiber using a fiber stripper. Ensure you do not damage the fiber during this process.
- Cleave the fiber
Cleave the bare fiber to a length of 10mm using a fiber cleaver. If the fiber does not cleave properly, ensure all acrylate coating has been removed.
- Insert the fiber into the splice holder
Place the cleaved fiber into the left-side fiber holder of the splice machine according to the specific instructions for your machine.
- Prepare the connector assembly
Open the connector assembly blister pack from right to left, ensuring to grab the handling stick rather than the fiber stub end.
- Position the connector assembly
Place the connector assembly into the disposable plastic holder with the fiber stub protruding to the left and the handling stick to the right.
- Close the splice holder
Close the holder on the right side of the splice area, ensuring the field fiber and stub fiber are about 1mm apart.
- Start the splice process
Close the wind cover of the splice stage. Depending on the machine, the splice process may start automatically or require pressing a start button.
- Complete the splice
After the splice is completed, the machine will provide an estimated insertion loss value. Do not touch the fiber or connector assembly until the tension test is complete.
- Install the splice protection sleeve
Gently slide the splice protection sleeve up to the rear of the fiber holder, then open both holders.
- Secure the splice
Grasp the fiber with your left hand and raise it slightly to ensure the splice protection sleeve slides flush against the metal part of the connector subassembly.
- Heat the splice
Place the splice point in the heater of the splice machine, ensuring the splice protection sleeve is centered. Close the heater cover and start the heating process.
- Assemble the connector
Once the heating and cooling cycle is complete, remove the assembly from the heating area and snap the front housing together with the rear housing.
- Finalize the installation
For SC connectors, install the outer housing. Ensure the red alignment dot on APC-style connectors faces up when assembling.
