How to Install the Panduit EL2P PDU
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for qualified personnel to install a Panduit Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) into a datacenter rack or cabinet, including mounting, grounding, and power connection.
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, T20 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
Cage nuts, Ground bonding cable, Mounting screws
- Review Safety Information and Prepare Tools
Before beginning, review the important safety information regarding high leakage current, overcurrent protection, and voltage verification. Ensure all circuit breakers are in the off position. Gather the required tools: #2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, T20 Torx screwdriver, and a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench. This installation must be performed by qualified personnel.
- Mount Vertical PDU (0U)
For vertical PDUs, adjust the pre-installed mounting buttons on the back of the PDU to the desired location if necessary. Insert the mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the PDU mounting bracket in the rack. Secure the PDU firmly using a #2 Phillips screwdriver, tightening the screws to a recommended torque of 3.0Nm. Ensure proper clearance of 2 to 3 inches between the PDU chassis and the cabinet frame or side panels for effective airflow.
- Mount Horizontal PDU (1U/2U)
For horizontal PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location on both the front and rear equipment rails of the rack. Screw the PDU's mounting bracket ears into the front and rear RETMA rail surfaces where the cage nuts were installed. For high power 1U/2U PDUs, use a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench to screw the front mounting brackets into the PDU chassis and tighten the socket head screws.
- Ground the PDU
Connect a ground bonding cable from the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or a grounding strip/bus bar in the rack. Ensure the conductor size meets national or local electrical codes (e.g., 14 AWG for up to 15A, 12 AWG for up to 20A, 10 AWG for up to 60A, 8 AWG for up to 100A, 6 AWG for up to 200A).
- Connect PDU to Power Source
Turn the feed circuit breaker OFF at the power source. Ensure all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to ON. Connect the PDU's input power cord to an appropriately rated branch circuit, adhering to all local and national electrical codes. Refer to the compliance label on the PDU for input ratings. Turn the feed circuit breaker ON and wait for the operating system to load until the Main Menu displays.
- Rotate Network Controller (Optional)
If a specific orientation of the physical ports is preferred, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws on the network controller. Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to prevent damage. Rotate the controller 180 degrees, then carefully reconnect the ribbon cable, ensuring correct orientation and avoiding crimping. Re-fasten the screws with a T10 Torx screwdriver, applying a torque of 2.2–3.1 lbf-in [0.25–0.35 N-M] to avoid metal deformation.
