How to Install a Panduit EL2P PDU
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for qualified personnel to safely install and initially set up a Panduit Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) in a datacenter rack or cabinet, including mounting, grounding, and power connection.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
PDU mounting hardware, Ground bonding cable, Blanking panels
- Prepare for Safe Installation and Optimal Airflow
Before beginning, review all safety information in the manual. Ensure the installation environment is temperature and humidity controlled, indoors, and free of conductive contaminants. Position the PDU to maintain a minimum clearance of 2 to 3 inches from cabinet frames or side panels to prevent blocking exhaust airflow. Seal any unused rack spaces with blanking panels to promote proper front-to-back airflow containment. Ensure all facility circuit breakers are in the OFF position before connecting input power.
- Mount the PDU in the Rack
For vertical (0U) PDUs, insert the pre-installed mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the rack's PDU mounting bracket. Secure them using a #2 Phillips screwdriver to a torque of 3.0Nm. For horizontal (1U/2U) PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location on both front and rear RETMA rails. Screw the mounting bracket ears into the RETMA rail surfaces. For high-power horizontal PDUs, also screw the mounting brackets on the front into the PDU chassis using a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench, tightening the socket head screws.
- Ground the PDU
Connect a ground bonding cable from the external earthing screw (typically found on the surface with the outlets) on the PDU chassis to a reliable grounding strip, grounding bus bar, or a known earthed reference terminal in the building. Ensure the conductor size meets national or local electrical codes (e.g., 14 AWG for up to 15A, 12 AWG for up to 20A). This provides supplementary Earth bonding to the rack metalwork.
- (Optional) Rotate the Network Controller
If a specific orientation of the physical ports is desired, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws from the network controller. Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to prevent damage. Rotate the controller to the desired orientation, then carefully reconnect the ribbon cable, ensuring correct orientation and avoiding pinching. Re-fasten the two screws using the T10 Torx screwdriver, torquing them to 2.2–3.1 lbf-in [0.25–0.35 N-M] to avoid metal deformation.
- Connect the PDU to a Power Source
Ensure the feed circuit breaker for the PDU's power source is in the OFF position. Verify that all individual circuit breakers on the PDU itself are set to the ON position. Connect the PDU's input power cord to an appropriately rated branch circuit, adhering to all local and national electrical codes. Refer to the compliance label on the PDU for input ratings. Finally, turn the feed circuit breaker ON. Allow the operating system to load; the Main Menu will display on the screen when complete.
- (Optional) Configure Dual-Rated PDUs
For dual-rated PDUs, perform an additional Command Line Interface (CLI) configuration step to enable the Web interface to report the correct power capacity. Refer to the "CLI Commands" section in the PDU's User Manual for detailed instructions on this configuration.
