How to Install and Connect a Panduit EL2P PDU
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and connecting a Panduit Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) into a datacenter rack or cabinet, including grounding and initial power connection.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
Ground bonding cable, Cage nuts
- Mount the Panduit PDU in the Rack
Carefully position the PDU in the datacenter rack or cabinet, maintaining a minimum clearance of 2 to 3 inches from adjacent IT equipment to ensure proper airflow. For vertical PDUs, insert the pre-installed mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the rack's PDU mounting bracket and secure them using a #2 Phillips screwdriver to a torque of 3.0Nm. For horizontal PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location on the RETMA rails, then screw the mounting bracket ears into the rail surface. For high power horizontal PDUs, use a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench to tighten the socket head screws on the front mounting brackets.
- Connect the Ground Bonding Cable
Locate the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis. Connect a ground bonding cable to this point using the provided screw and star washer. Bond the PDU to a known earthed reference terminal in the building, a grounding strip, or a grounding bus bar within the rack. Ensure the conductor size meets national or local electrical codes (e.g., 14 AWG for up to 15A, 12 AWG for up to 20A). WARNING: HIGH LEAKAGE CURRENT. Ensure a reliable grounded (earthed) connection before connecting power distribution products to AC power to reduce the risk of electric shock.
- Connect PDU to Branch Circuit Power
Before connecting, turn OFF the feed circuit breaker for the branch circuit. Verify that all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to the ON position. Connect the PDU's input power cord to an appropriately rated, grounded (earthed) electrical outlet that provides branch circuit overcurrent protection, adhering to all local and national electrical codes. Once connected, turn ON the feed circuit breaker and allow the PDU's operating system to load until the Main Menu displays on the screen. WARNING: Be sure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power.
- Adjust Network Controller Orientation (Optional)
If a specific physical orientation for the network controller's ports is desired, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws. Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to prevent damage, then rotate the controller to the preferred orientation. Reconnect the ribbon cable, ensuring correct orientation and avoiding pinching. Reinstall the screws and torque them to a range of 2.2–3.1 lbf-in [0.25–0.35 N-M] to prevent metal deformation.
