How to Install a Panduit EL2P Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU)
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for qualified personnel to safely install and connect a Panduit EL2P Rack PDU into a datacenter rack or cabinet.
Estimated time: 1h
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, T20 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
Mounting hardware, Cage nuts, Ground bonding cable, Star washer
- Review Safety Information and Prepare for Installation
Before beginning, thoroughly review all safety information in the PDU installation manual. Ensure that the installation environment is temperature and humidity controlled, free of conductive contaminants, and within 0°C to 60°C (32°F to 140°F). Verify that all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. Ensure the PDU is positioned to maintain 2-3 inches clearance for airflow and seal unused rack spaces with blanking panels. WARNING: High leakage current exists. Ensure a reliable grounded (earthed) connection before connecting power distribution products to AC power. Installation must be performed by individuals knowledgeable about AC power products.
- Mount the PDU in the Rack
Determine the appropriate mounting method for your PDU (vertical 0U or horizontal 1U/2U). For vertical PDUs, insert the pre-installed mounting buttons into the keyhole slots on the rack's PDU mounting bracket and secure them using a #2 Phillips screwdriver to 3.0Nm. For horizontal PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location(s) on both front and rear RETMA rails, then screw the mounting bracket ears into the rail surfaces. For high-power horizontal PDUs, use a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench to tighten the socket head screws on the front mounting brackets into the PDU chassis. Use only the hardware provided to install the PDU.
- Ground the PDU
Connect a ground bonding cable to the external ground bonding point on the PDU chassis, typically found on the surface with the outlets. Use the provided external earthing screw and star washer for supplementary Earth bonding to the rack metalwork or a known earthed reference terminal in the building. Ensure conductor sizes meet national or local electrical codes (e.g., NEC Table 250.122 for copper conductors). WARNING: For permanently connected PDUs, installation must be performed by a licensed electrician and connected to a protective earth ground.
- Connect the PDU to a Power Source
Ensure the feed circuit breaker for the power source is OFF. Verify that all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to the ON position. Connect the PDU's input power cord to an appropriately rated, grounded (earthed) branch circuit, adhering to all local and national electrical codes. Ensure the power cord has sufficient length. After connecting, turn the feed circuit breaker ON and wait for the operating system to load and the Main Menu to display on the screen. WARNING: Connect only to a circuit providing branch circuit overcurrent protection of appropriate current rating. Do not overload the PDU; total input current of connected equipment cannot exceed the PDU's total output rating.
- Configure Dual Rated PDUs (Optional)
If you have a dual-rated PDU, refer to the CLI Commands in the User Manual for an additional configuration step required to enable the Web interface to report the correct power capacity.
