How to Install a Panduit EL2P PDU
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing and connecting a Panduit Rack Power Distribution Unit (PDU) into a datacenter rack or cabinet, covering mounting, grounding, and power connection procedures for both vertical and horizontal models.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
#2 Phillips screwdriver, T10 Torx screwdriver, T20 Torx screwdriver, 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench
Supplies needed:
Mounting screws, Cage nuts, Ground bonding cable
- Prepare for Installation and Safety Check
WARNING: Ensure a reliable grounded (earthed) connection before connecting power distribution products to AC power. Connect only to a circuit providing appropriate branch circuit overcurrent protection. Be sure all circuit breakers are in the off position before connecting input power. Installation must be performed by qualified personnel. Verify that devices connected to the PDU are capable of operation from the same line voltage supplying the PDU to prevent severe equipment damage.
- Mount the PDU in the Rack
For vertical PDUs, adjust pre-installed mounting buttons if needed, then insert them into the keyhole slots on the rack's PDU mounting bracket. Secure with a #2 Phillips screwdriver to 3.0Nm. For horizontal PDUs, install cage nuts at the desired U location on both front and rear RETMA equipment rails. Screw the mounting bracket ears into the front RETMA rail surface, and for high power units, also into the rear. Secure the front mounting brackets to the PDU chassis using a 2.5mm hex key Allen wrench.
- Ground the PDU Chassis
Connect a ground bonding cable to the external ground bonding point located on the PDU chassis. Use this point to bond the PDU to a known earthed reference terminal in the building or to the rack metalwork for supplementary Earth bonding. Ensure conductor sizes meet National or Local Electrical Codes (e.g., NEC Table 250.122 or equivalent based on country).
- Connect the PDU to a Power Source
WARNING: Turn off the feed circuit breaker for the dedicated circuit. Verify all circuit breakers on the PDU are set to 'On'. Connect the PDU to an appropriately rated branch circuit, adhering to all local and national electrical codes. Turn the feed circuit breaker 'On' and wait for the operating system to load. When complete, the Main Menu will display on the screen.
- Rotate Network Controller (Optional)
If a specific orientation of the physical ports is preferred, use a T10 Torx screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the network controller. Carefully disconnect the ribbon cable to prevent damage. Rotate the controller to the desired orientation, then carefully reconnect the ribbon cable, avoiding crimping or pinching. Reinstall and torque the two screws to a range of 2.2–3.1 lbf-in [0.25–0.35 N-M]. NOTE: Overtightening may result in metal deformation.
