Overview

The Panduit CDE1 Air Inlet Duct (SKU: CDE1) is a 1 RU footprint solution designed to optimize thermal efficiency for Cisco 4948, 4928, and 4924 switches in cabinet applications. This in-line duct resides below the switch, directing cold aisle airflow directly to the switch intake for improved cooling performance. By sealing raised floor cutouts and minimizing bypass airflow, the CDE1 reduces fan power consumption by enabling lower fan speeds, which enhances switch reliability and extends operational lifespan. Constructed from electrostatic dissipative, flame-retardant materials compliant with UL94 V-0 and FAR 25.853 standards, the duct ensures safety and durability in demanding environments. RoHS and NEC compliant, the CDE1 includes an airtight fabric and Tak-Ty® closure system for secure fitment in both new and retrofit installations. Compatible with 21.5”–23.5” (546.1mm–596.9mm) switch depths, this duct integrates seamlessly into Net-Contain3 Cold Aisle Containment deployments, providing a scalable solution for data centers and network closets. The snap-in design eliminates the need for tools, streamlining installation and reducing deployment time. Ideal for optimizing thermal management in hot/cold aisle environments, the CDE1 is a critical component for maintaining switch performance and energy efficiency in modern network infrastructures.

How to Install the CDE1 Thermal Ducting

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the CDE1 thermal ducting in a cabinet below a switch, ensuring proper ventilation and grounding.

Estimated time: 1h

Tools needed:

#2 Phillips Screwdriver, #3 Phillips Screwdriver, 5/16” Socket Wrench, 1/2” Socket Wrench

Supplies needed:

Cage nuts, Mounting screws (#12-24 Phillips screws, #10-32 Phillips pan head screws), Hex head grounding screws (green), D-ring cable manager

  1. Install Cage Nuts

Insert two cage nuts per rail in the equipment rails located one rack space below the switch. Ensure to include one grounding cage nut (green) in each rail.

  2. Adjust and Install Side Ducts

Loosen the 5/16” serrated flange lock nuts on the left and right side duct assemblies using a 1/2” socket wrench. Adjust the assemblies to match the cabinet equipment rail span, then retighten the nuts to 12 ft.-lbs. torque. Attach each assembly to the cabinet equipment rail using one #12-24 Phillips screw and one hex head grounding screw (green).

  3. Install Inlet Duct

Orient the inlet duct with perforations facing the front of the cabinet. Slide the inlet duct into position between the left and right side ducts, ensuring the rear rests against the side rail flanges. Attach the rear of the inlet duct to the side duct assemblies using two #10-32 Phillips pan head screws and two #10 lockwashers, tightening them to 35 in.-lbs.

  4. Install D-Ring Cable Manager

Remove the four #12-24 screws fastening the side-mounted transitional ducting assemblies to the rear equipment rails while supporting the bottom of the CDE1 assembly. Position the D-ring cable manager in the rear rack space immediately below the switch, overlaying the hinged mounting flaps of the side duct assemblies. Attach it to the cabinet equipment rails with one #12-24 Phillips screw and one hex head grounding screw (green) per rail.

  5. Remove Rear Switch Mounting Brackets

After the inlet ducting is installed, remove the manufacturer-supplied rear switch mounting brackets to promote proper ventilation of the switch.
