How to Install and Crimp NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on the correct conductor size, then crimp them using the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip, clean, insert, and crimp sequence carefully to ensure a secure electrical connection.

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Approved mechanical crimp tool if applicable (NSI M-250 or NSI M-500)

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the cable, Copper conductor cable, Approved dies for the selected crimp tool

  1. Select the correct connector and tool

Choose a lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application shown in the connector chart. Verify that the conductor type is compatible with the connector, and select an approved crimp tool and die set for the connector series before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor to the proper length

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking or damaging the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the connector barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the exposed conductor is clean before insertion to support a reliable connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully into the connector

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel so the stripped portion is fully seated. Verify that the conductor fills the barrel and is not partially inserted.

  5. Crimp the connector with the approved tool

Crimp the connector using the approved tool and the correct die locations marked by the manufacturer. Follow the required number of crimps for the connector series, and apply twice as many crimps for long-barrel lugs and splices as indicated. Use only certified UL-approved tools and dies.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the connector is secure and the conductor remains fully seated. Ensure the connection matches the specified crimp pattern and that no strands are damaged or exposed beyond the connector.
