How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor, and crimp it with the approved tool and die set.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Mechanical crimp tool (NSI M-250 or NSI M-500, as applicable), Approved dies for the selected connector and conductor size

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector (lug or splice) sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable

  1. Select the correct connector

    Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the cable size and conductor type. Verify that the connector series and barrel style match the application before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor carefully

    Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel and fill it completely.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

    Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Make sure the exposed conductor is clean before insertion.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

    Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated and that the stripped portion fills the barrel.

  5. Crimp the connector

    Crimp the connector using an approved tool and the correct die set for the connector size. Follow the manufacturer’s suggested crimp locations marked on the barrel. For long-barrel lugs and splices, perform twice as many crimps as indicated. Use only approved tools and dies for the selected series.

  6. Verify the finished connection

    Inspect the crimped connection to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Ensure the connector is correctly matched to the conductor size and that no insulation or loose strands interfere with the connection.
