How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors
Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on compatible copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp using the approved tool and die set for a secure connection.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool, Approved dies or dieless crimp tool, Mechanical crimp tool (optional: NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for larger cable sizes)
Supplies needed:
NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable
- Select the correct connector
Choose an NSI lug or splice connector that matches the conductor size and series requirements. Verify the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before starting.
- Strip and clean the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation to the specified strip length without nicking the strands. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and make sure the exposed copper is clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully
Push the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so it fills the barrel fully. Do not leave exposed strands outside the barrel, and confirm the conductor is seated all the way in.
- Crimp the connector
Crimp the connector using the approved NSI tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure, properly aligned, and fully compressed. For larger cable sizes, use the specified mechanical crimp tool if required, and ensure the final connection meets the connector and tool instructions.
