How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp using an approved tool and die set.

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Compatible dies for the selected connector size, Mechanical crimp tool (NSI M-250 or NSI M-500, if applicable)

Supplies needed:

Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor, UL-approved connector/die set matched to wire size, Optional anti-oxidation cleaning supplies if required by site practice

  1. Select the correct connector

    Choose a lug or splice that matches the conductor size and connector series listed for the application. Verify that the connector is intended for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor to the proper length

    Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

    Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion, because a dirty conductor can reduce connection quality.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

    Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the stripped portion is fully seated and that the barrel is completely filled.

  5. Crimp the connector with the approved tool

    Use an approved NSI crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated. Use NSI M-250 for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable or NSI M-500 for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable when applicable.

  6. Verify the finished connection

    Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is fully seated, properly crimped, and matched to the conductor size. Do not use a connector if the conductor was nicked, the barrel was not fully filled, or the crimp locations were not followed.
