How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and crimping using approved tools and dies.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or compression tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series, NSI M-250 crimp tool for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable, NSI M-500 crimp tool for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable, NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 tool

Supplies needed:

Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor, Insulation to be stripped from conductor

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the conductor size and series being installed. Verify that the connector matches the cable size and the approved tool or die set before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor correctly

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove any oxide film. Keep the conductor clean so the connection seats properly and makes good electrical contact.

  4. Insert the conductor into the barrel

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the conductor is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the barrel.

  5. Crimp the connector

Use an approved NSI compression tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as shown in the parenthesis.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor is fully inserted and the crimp locations are correct. Ensure the connector is secure and that the installation matches the selected size and tool requirements.
