Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector (lug or splice) sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable

  1. Select the correct connector

    Choose a lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify that the connector series and barrel type are approved for the cable being installed, and confirm the required crimp tool and die set from the chart before starting.

  2. Prepare the conductor

    Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor will fully insert into and fill the connector barrel. Safety warning: damaged strands can reduce conductivity and connection quality.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

    Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the exposed copper is clean before insertion so the connector can make a solid electrical connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

    Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Verify that the stripped portion is completely inside the barrel and that no bare conductor is left exposed outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the connector

    Use an approved NSI compression tool or listed equivalent die set to crimp the connector at the marked locations. Follow the barrel markings and the chart for the correct number of crimps; long-barrel connectors require twice the number of crimps shown in parentheses.

  6. Verify the finished connection

    Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure, properly aligned, and fully compressed. Check that the conductor cannot be pulled out by hand and that the connection matches the specified crimp pattern for the connector series.
