Install NSI copper compression connectors by selecting the correct lug or splice, preparing the conductor, and crimping with the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure, code-compliant connection.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Compatible approved dies or mechanical crimp tool (as applicable)
Supplies needed:
Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor, Wire insulation to be stripped from the conductor
- Select the correct connector and tool
Choose the NSI lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify the connector series, strip length, and approved crimp tool/die combination before starting. Warning: Use only approved tools and dies for the connector series and conductor type.
- Strip and clean the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and fill it completely. Wire brush the stripped portion to remove oxide films, and keep the conductor clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully into the barrel
Insert the cleaned stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the conductor is fully seated and that no strands are outside the barrel before crimping.
- Crimp the connector at the marked locations
Crimp the connector using the approved NSI tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations. For long-barrel lugs and splices, make twice as many crimps as indicated in the table. Warning: Ensure the tool and die match the connector series to avoid an improper connection.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the connector is secure and the conductor remains fully seated. Check that the correct number of crimps was made and that the connection matches the specified strip length and connector size.
