How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors
Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on compatible copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and proper crimping for a secure electrical connection.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series
Supplies needed:
NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the conductor, Compatible copper conductor, Oxide-inhibiting compound if required by your application
- Select the correct connector
Choose an NSI lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series required for the application. Verify that the connector is approved for the conductor type and size before starting.
- Prepare the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation without nicking the strands, leaving enough bare conductor to completely fill the connector barrel. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and keep the exposed copper clean.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel so the stripped portion is fully seated. Verify that the conductor fills the barrel and is not partially inserted.
- Crimp the connector
Use an approved compression crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Make the required number of crimps at the manufacturer-suggested barrel markings; long-barrel connectors require twice as many crimps as indicated in the table.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor is secure, fully seated, and properly compressed. Ensure the installation matches the specified connector size and crimp pattern before energizing the circuit.
