Select the correct NSI copper compression lug or splice, prepare the conductor, and crimp the connector using the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure, code-compliant connection.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Compatible mechanical crimp tool (NSI M-250 or NSI M-500, as applicable), Approved dies for the selected connector series
Supplies needed:
NSI copper compression connector or splice sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable, Optional anti-oxide cleaning materials if required by site practice
- Select the correct connector
Choose a lug or splice that matches the conductor size and connector series required for the application. Verify the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before proceeding.
- Strip the conductor to the proper length
Carefully strip the insulation so the conductor can be fully inserted into the connector barrel and fill it completely. Do not nick or damage the strands while stripping.
- Clean the stripped conductor
Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the exposed copper is clean before insertion to promote a reliable connection.
- Insert the conductor fully
Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated. Confirm the stripped portion fills the barrel and no strands are left outside the connector.
- Crimp the connector with the approved tool
Use the specified NSI crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps shown in the table.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure, properly aligned, and fully compressed. If the installation uses a long-barrel connector, verify that all required crimp locations were completed.
