Overview

NSI Industries L40NP 2 Hole Long Barrel Copper Compression Lug (SKU: L40NP) is a high-conductivity, tin-plated copper connector engineered for reliable terminations on 4/0 AWG flexible copper cables, including locomotive, welding, and mining applications. Designed for 600V systems, this UL486A and UL467 listed lug features a long barrel design with a gentle flared end to simplify cable insertion while minimizing strand damage and chafing during operation. The flared entry reduces pressure on cable strands post-installation, extending service life in high-vibration environments. Key specifications include a 1/2" bolt size, 0.764" barrel inner diameter, 0.949" outer diameter, and 1.386" overall length. The lug is color-coded (blue) for easy identification and marked with die indexing for consistent crimping. Tin plating ensures corrosion resistance and low contact resistance, critical for long-term electrical performance. Rated for 90°C operation, the L40NP meets NEC 310.15 ampacity requirements for Class B or C building wire copper cables. For applications exceeding 2000V, consult cable manufacturer voltage stress relief instructions. Ideal for industrial power distribution, motor controls, and grounding systems, the L40NP accommodates 4/0 AWG copper cables with expanded range compatibility when used with NSI N12ID dieless compression tools. The single mounting hole design simplifies installation, while the UL listing ensures compliance with grounding and bonding standards. NSI Industries, a US-based manufacturer, provides this durable connector for heavy-duty electrical systems requiring dependable, code-compliant connections.

How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp using an approved tool and die set.

Estimated time: 20m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector, NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 mechanical crimp tool (for applicable cable sizes), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool or NSI N1240 tool (optional, where applicable)

Supplies needed:

Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Oxide-removal cleaning supplies if needed

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the cable size and conductor type. Verify that the connector series and barrel style match the application before starting. Do not use a connector that does not match the conductor size.

  2. Strip and clean the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough length so the conductor will fully insert into and fill the connector barrel. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and keep the exposed copper clean.

  3. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the stripped portion is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the barrel. Ensure the conductor is clean and properly aligned before crimping.

  4. Crimp with the approved tool

Crimp the connector using an approved UL-listed tool and die set for the selected connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations when using NSI N12ID or N1240 tools. Use the correct number of crimps for the connector type, and apply twice as many crimps for long-barrel lugs and splices as indicated. Use only approved tools and dies for the cable size.

  5. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the connector is secure and the conductor is fully retained. Check that the crimp locations match the connector markings and that the installation is suitable for the conductor size. If the connection is not fully seated or properly crimped, remove it and reinstall with the correct connector and tool.
