How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on compatible copper conductors. This guide covers conductor preparation, connector selection, and crimping using approved tools and dies.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool, Approved dies or dieless crimp tool (if applicable)

Supplies needed:

Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a lug or splice that matches the conductor size and application. Verify the connector series and barrel style are compatible with the cable type before starting.

  2. Prepare the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the connector barrel and fill it completely.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films. Ensure the exposed conductor is clean before insertion.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm the stripped portion is fully seated and the barrel is filled.

  5. Crimp the connector

Use an approved NSI compression tool and the correct die set for the connector size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated. Use NSI M-250 or M-500 mechanical crimp tools only for the specified cable sizes, and use approved tools such as N12ID or N1240 when applicable.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm the conductor is fully seated and the crimp is properly formed. Do not use a connector if the conductor was nicked, not fully inserted, or if the crimp was made with an unapproved tool.
