How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on the correct conductor size. Select the proper connector, prepare the conductor carefully, and crimp it using the approved tool and die set for a secure connection.

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved compression crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Optional mechanical crimp tools: NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for the specified cable/

Supplies needed:

Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Approved dies for the selected tool, if required

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a lug or splice that matches the conductor size and connector series shown in the chart. Verify that the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor insulation

Carefully strip the insulation to the specified length so the conductor can fully insert into the connector barrel. Do not nick or damage the strands while stripping.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion to support a reliable electrical connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated and the barrel is completely filled. Verify that no strands are left outside the connector.

  5. Crimp the connector

Use an approved NSI compression crimp tool and the correct die set for the connector series and wire size. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice the crimps shown in the chart.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure and properly formed. If the installation uses a long-barrel connector, confirm all required crimp locations were completed.
