How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Select, prepare, and crimp an NSI copper compression lug or splice onto a copper conductor. Follow the connector size chart and crimp-tool guidance to ensure a clean, secure connection.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, NSI M-250 crimp tool, NSI M-500 crimp tool, NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 crimp tool

Supplies needed:

Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Approved compression dies or tool inserts as required by the selected tool

  1. Select the correct connector and tool

Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series shown in the chart. Verify that the selected crimp tool and dies are approved for the connector series and conductor size before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor carefully

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor to the required length so the stripped wire will fully insert into the connector barrel. Do not nick or damage the strands while stripping.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion to promote a reliable connection.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the cleaned conductor completely into the connector barrel until it is fully seated and the barrel is filled. Confirm that the stripped portion is completely inside the connector before crimping.

  5. Crimp the connector

Crimp the connector using the approved NSI tool and the crimp locations marked on the barrel. For long-barrel lugs and splices, make twice as many crimps as indicated in the chart. Follow the manufacturer’s suggested crimp locations when using N12ID or N1240 tools.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure, properly aligned, and fully compressed. If the connector or conductor does not match the chart or the crimp looks incomplete, remove it and repeat the process with the correct parts and tool.
