How to Install and Crimp NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install a copper compression lug or splice on a properly sized copper conductor. Select the correct connector, prepare the wire, and crimp it using the approved tool and die set for a secure connection.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or die set (for example, NSI M-250, NSI M-500, N12ID, or N24

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression connector (lug or splice) sized for the conductor, Copper conductor cable, Wire connector/terminal as required

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series. Verify the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors before starting.

  2. Strip and clean the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation without nicking the strands, leaving enough exposed conductor to completely fill the connector barrel. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and keep the conductor clean before insertion.

  3. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so the strands fill the barrel fully. Do not leave exposed strands outside the barrel, and confirm the conductor is seated to the end.

  4. Crimp the connector

Use the approved crimp tool and the correct die listed for the connector size. Crimp at the barrel markings or suggested crimp locations, and make the required number of crimps; long-barrel connectors require twice as many crimps as shown in the chart.

  5. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connection to confirm it is secure and properly formed. Ensure the connector is fully compressed on the conductor and that no strands are loose or damaged.
