How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp using the approved tool and die set.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool or mechanical crimp tool, NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 tool, Approved Greenlee, Ilsco, Burndy, T&B, or Huskie dies

Supplies needed:

NSI copper compression lug or splice connector sized for the cable, Copper conductor, Insulation to be stripped from the conductor

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a lug or splice connector that matches the cable size and conductor type. Verify the connector series and tool/die requirements before starting, and do not use an undersized or mismatched connector.

  2. Strip the conductor carefully

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough length so the conductor can be completely inserted into the barrel and fill it fully.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Ensure the conductor is clean before insertion, because poor surface condition can reduce connection quality.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated and that the stripped portion is clean and completely inside the barrel before crimping.

  5. Crimp with the approved tool

Crimp the connector using the approved NSI tool or a listed compatible tool and die set. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and apply the required number of crimps; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated in the table.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the connector is secure and the conductor has not shifted. Use the correct tool and die combination for the connector series, and repeat the crimp only at the specified locations if required.
