How to Install NSI Copper Compression Connectors

Install and crimp NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors. Select the correct connector size, prepare the conductor properly, and crimp it using the approved tool and die set.

Tools needed:

Wire brush, Approved crimp tool, Approved dies for the selected connector series, NSI M-250 crimp tool (for 250 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI M-500 crimp tool (for 500 MCM Class B & C copper cable), NSI N12ID dieless crimp tool, NSI N1240 tool

Supplies needed:

Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor, Insulation to be stripped from the conductor

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose the proper NSI lug or splice connector for the conductor size and cable type. Verify that the connector size matches the table for the wire gauge or MCM being installed before starting.

  2. Strip the conductor carefully

Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip only enough length so the conductor will fully insert into the barrel and completely fill it.

  3. Clean the stripped conductor

Wire brush the stripped portion of the conductor to remove oxide films and contamination. Make sure the exposed conductor is clean before insertion.

  4. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Verify that the conductor is fully seated and that the stripped portion fills the barrel.

  5. Crimp with the approved tool

Crimp the connector using an approved UL-listed tool and the correct die set for the connector series. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations when using N12ID or N1240 tools, and make the required number of crimps for the connector type. Long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated.

  6. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the connector is secure and the conductor remains fully seated. Use the proper tool and die combination for the specific connector series, and do not use an unapproved crimp method.
