Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices by selecting the correct connector size, preparing the conductor, and crimping it with the approved tool and die. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure, UL-approved connection.
Tools needed:
Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Optional mechanical crimp tools: NSI M-250 or NSI M-500 for compatible large-gau, Approved dies listed for the selected connector and tool
Supplies needed:
Correct NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Insulation to be stripped from the conductor
- Select the correct connector and tool
Choose the NSI lug or splice that matches the conductor size and connector series. Verify that the connector is approved for the conductor type and that you have the correct crimp tool and die set for the selected connector. Use only approved tools and dies for the series being installed.
- Strip and clean the conductor
Carefully strip the insulation from the conductor without nicking the strands. Strip enough insulation so the conductor will fully insert into the connector barrel and fill it completely. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and keep the exposed copper clean before insertion.
- Insert the conductor fully into the barrel
Insert the cleaned, stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel. Confirm that the conductor is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the barrel. Do not crimp until the conductor is completely inserted.
- Crimp at the marked locations
Crimp the connector using the approved tool and die at the barrel markings or suggested crimp locations. Follow the number of crimps specified for the connector series; long-barrel lugs and splices require twice as many crimps as indicated in the table. Make each crimp firmly and evenly to secure the connection.
- Verify the finished connection
Inspect the completed crimp to confirm the conductor remains fully seated and the connector is securely compressed. Check that the correct connector size, tool, and die were used, and verify the installation is clean and mechanically sound before energizing the circuit.
