How to Install Copper Compression Connectors

Install NSI copper compression lugs or splices on copper conductors by selecting the correct connector, preparing the cable, and crimping with the approved tool and die set. Follow the strip-length and crimp-location guidance to ensure a secure, UL-approved connection.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire stripper, Wire brush, Approved crimp tool (NSI N12ID or NSI N1240), Compatible approved dies or mechanical crimp tool, Cable cutter

Supplies needed:

Correctly sized NSI copper compression lug or splice connector, Copper conductor cable, Optional oxide-inhibiting compound if required by local practice

  1. Select the correct connector

Choose a lug or splice that matches the cable size and connector series required for the installation. Verify that the connector is approved for concentric, compressed, or compact copper conductors and that the tool/die combination is compatible with the connector barrel markings.

  2. Prepare the conductor

Carefully strip the insulation to the specified length without nicking the strands. Wire brush the stripped conductor to remove oxide films, and keep the exposed copper clean before insertion.

  3. Insert the conductor fully

Insert the stripped conductor completely into the connector barrel so the conductor fills the barrel. Verify that the conductor is fully seated and that no strands are left outside the connector.

  4. Crimp the connector

Crimp the connector using the approved NSI N12ID or N1240 tool, or another listed approved tool and die set. Follow the barrel markings for suggested crimp locations, and make twice as many crimps for long-barrel lugs and splices as indicated in the instructions.

  5. Verify the finished connection

Inspect the crimped connector to confirm it is secure, properly aligned, and fully compressed. Ensure the conductor cannot be pulled out by hand and that the installation matches the required crimp count and location guidance.
