Overview

The ABB Installation Products XJG28-EMT is a 3/4 inch conduit expansion coupling designed for use with EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing) conduit. This coupling provides 8 inches of axial movement, accommodating thermal expansion and contraction in long conduit runs, thereby preventing stress on the conduit system and connected equipment. It features an integrated internal bonding jumper, ensuring continuous electrical continuity across the expansion joint. This is crucial for maintaining grounding and fault current paths, a requirement for safe and compliant electrical installations. The XJG28-EMT is manufactured by ABB, a recognized name in electrical infrastructure. Its primary function is to absorb movement, making it suitable for applications where significant temperature fluctuations occur, such as industrial facilities, large commercial buildings, and outdoor installations. The 3/4 inch size is standard for many electrical wiring applications. The internal bonding jumper simplifies installation by eliminating the need for separate bonding conductors across the coupling. This product is essential for maintaining the integrity and safety of electrical systems subject to environmental changes. SKU: XJG28-EMT. UNSPSC Code: 39121434.

How to Install the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint with Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT), ensuring proper connection and allowance for thermal movement.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Pipe wrench

Supplies needed:

Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

  1. Insert Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT)

Ensure the gland nuts on the XJG-EMT Expansion Joint are partially tightened as received from the factory. Insert the Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) into each end of the expansion joint until it is fully seated.

  2. Secure Gland Nuts

Using a pipe wrench, tighten the gland nut at each end of the EMT connector. Refer to the Torque Chart (e.g., 90.4 N•m for 3/4" and smaller, 113 N•m for 1" to 1-1/2", 181 N•m for 2" and larger) to achieve the correct torque, ensuring a rain-tight seal by compressing the Teflon packing around the tubing.

  3. Adjust for Movement

Position the internal bushing in the middle of the expansion joint fitting. This allows for equal longitudinal movement (2 or 4 inches in either direction, depending on the specific XJG-EMT model) to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction of the conduit.
