How to Install a Heat-Shrink Compression Splice Kit
This guide provides detailed instructions for installing a heat-shrink compression splice kit. Always follow standard safe work practices, wear appropriate personal protective equipment, and ensure installation is performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Wire strippers, Wire brush, Crimping tool with recommended die, Heat torch, Safety glasses, Protective gloves, Multimeter
Supplies needed:
Heat-shrink tubing, Compression connector, Oxide inhibitor (for aluminum conductors), Cable
- Disconnect Power and Prepare Cable
WARNING: Risk of shock. Disconnect all power to the cable before beginning installation. Strip both ends of the cable insulation to 1/2 the length of the connector plus 1/4 inch. Clean the cable insulation thoroughly.
- Position Heat-Shrink Tubing
Carefully place the heat-shrink tubing over one of the clean cable ends. Ensure the tubing is protected from potential damage by the conductor strands as it slides over the cable.
- Prepare Conductor Strands
Wire brush the conductor strands on both cable ends. If working with aluminum conductors, apply oxide inhibitor and wire brush it into the strands to ensure proper contact.
- Install and Crimp Connector
Install the compression connector onto the prepared cable ends. Using the recommended die marked on the connector, crimp the connector securely. After crimping, clean and deburr the connector if necessary.
- Shrink Heat-Shrink Tubing
Center the heat-shrink tubing over the splice. Using a heat torch with a rapid brushing motion, apply flame to the heat-shrinkable material. Begin shrinking at the center of the tube, working the flame uniformly around all sides. Once the center is shrunk, work towards one end, then the opposite end, until the entire tube is completely shrunk. Keep the flame moving to avoid scorching.
- Inspect and Cool Splice
Inspect the completed splice. The properly installed tube should be smooth and conform tightly to the connection, with adhesive visible at both ends. Reheat any flat spots or wrinkles as needed. Note: Allow the installation to cool completely before touching, moving, or placing the splice in service.
