This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing a heat-shrink compression splice kit, covering cable preparation, connector crimping, and proper heat-shrink application for a secure splice.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Torches, Wire brush, Crimping tool
Supplies needed:
Heat-shrink tubing, Compression connector, Oxide inhibitor
- Prepare Cable Insulation
WARNING: Risk of shock, disconnect power before installation. Strip both ends of the cable insulation to a length equal to half the connector's length plus an additional 1/4 inch. CAUTION: Wear safety glasses and protective gloves.
- Clean Cable Insulation
Thoroughly clean the prepared cable insulation on both ends to ensure proper adhesion and splice integrity.
- Position Heat-Shrink Tubing
Carefully place the heat-shrink tubing over one of the clean cable ends. Ensure the tubing is protected from potential damage by the conductor strands as it slides over the cable end.
- Prepare Conductor Strands
Wire brush the conductor strands to remove any oxidation. If working with aluminum conductors, coat the conductor with an oxide inhibitor and wire brush it thoroughly into the strands.
- Install and Crimp Connector
Install the compression connector onto the prepared cable ends, ensuring proper seating. Crimp the connector using the recommended die size marked on the connector itself. After crimping, clean and deburr the connector if necessary.
- Shrink Heat-Shrink Tubing
Center the heat-shrink tubing over the splice and hold it firmly in position. Using a torch, apply the outer 3-4 inch tip of the flame to the heat-shrinkable material with a rapid, brushing motion. Continuously move the flame to prevent scorching. Begin shrinking at the center of the tube, applying uniform heat around all sides. Once the center is shrunk, work the torch towards one end, then to the opposite end, until the entire tube is completely shrunk.
- Inspect and Cool Splice
Inspect the completed splice. A properly installed tube will be smooth, conform tightly to the connection, and adhesive will be visible at both ends. Reheat any flat spots or wrinkles as needed. Allow the installation to cool completely before touching, moving, or placing it into service.
