How to Install STX Series Star Teck Cable Fittings

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing cables and installing STX Series Star Teck cable fittings, including the STX150-550 model, using liquid sealing compound. Installation must be performed by a qualified electrician in accordance with national and local electrical codes.

Estimated time: 2h

Tools needed:

Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Wrench, Damp cloth, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Supplies needed:

Cable (power or shielded data), SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT, Fiber damming material

  1. De-energize Circuits

WARNING: Verify that all circuits are de-energized before beginning any installation or maintenance procedures to prevent the risk of electrical shock.

  2. Prepare Cable Armor

Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Do not nick or cut the conductor insulation during this process.

  3. Adjust Armor Strip Length

Trim the outer jacket to achieve the exposed armor strip length specified in the product table for your specific STX model (e.g., 1.375-1.545 inches for STX150-550).

  4. Feed Cable

Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push it until the cable armor firmly contacts the internal end stop.

  5. Tighten Gland Nut

Securely tighten the gland nut to achieve an appropriate seal, or to the maximum torque specified in the table (e.g., 1200 IN-LBS for STX150-550). Ensure the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable's outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face, keeping the cable centered for an optimal seal.

  6. Disassemble Fitting

Loosen the union to disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly. Then, unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly.

  7. Prepare Conductors

Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8” to 3/8” to expose the conductor bundle. If working with shielded data cables, also remove the outer (overall) shield and any filler materials, taking care not to damage inner shields or conductors.

  8. Pack Fiber Damming Material

Tightly pack the fiber damming material into all voids between the conductors and the body. If applicable, spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor.

  9. Reattach Sealing Chamber

Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body sub-assembly until it is completely seated.

  10. Mix and Dispense Liquid Sealant

Position the cable and fitting vertically. Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound according to its package instructions. Dispense the compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the level stabilizes and fills to the top (for STX150-550).

  11. Clean Excess Compound

CAUTION: Immediately remove any excess compound material from the exterior of the sealing chamber using a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or a wire brush, as these may damage the flame path.

  12. Mount Hub and Secure Assembly

Mount the hub in the desired location. After the sealing compound has solidified (approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it by tightening the union until it bottoms out (metal-to-metal contact).
