This guide provides detailed instructions for preparing a power cable and installing the STX150-471 Star Teck cable fitting, including sealing with liquid compound.
Estimated time: 1h 30m
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Torque wrench, Damp cloth
Supplies needed:
STX150-471 cable fitting, Power cable, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (2 units), Fiber damming material, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including gloves
- De-energize Circuits and Prepare Cable
Before starting, verify that all circuits are de-energized to prevent electrical shock. Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure. Remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. Exercise caution to avoid nicking or cutting the conductor insulation.
- Trim Outer Jacket and Feed Cable
Trim the outer jacket to achieve an exposed armor strip length between 1.475 and 1.795 inches, as specified for the STX150-471. Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push it until the cable armor firmly hits the end stop.
- Tighten Gland Nut
Tighten the gland nut to an appropriate seal or to the maximum torque of 1200 IN-LBS. Ensure that the bushing and collar ring seal evenly around the cable’s outer jacket and are flush with the gland nut face. Verify the cable remains centered for an optimal seal.
- Disassemble and Prepare for Sealing
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. Trim the inner jacket to a length of 1/8” to 3/8” to expose the conductor bundle.
- Pack Fiber Damming Material
Pack the fiber damming material tightly into all voids between the conductors and the body of the fitting. If applicable, spread the strands of any uninsulated grounding conductor to ensure thorough packing.
- Reassemble Sealing Chamber and Position
Screw the sealing chamber back onto the body subassembly until it completely seats. Position the cable and fitting assembly into a vertical orientation, which is crucial for proper liquid compound application.
- Mix and Dispense Liquid Sealing Compound
Mix the SC4-KIT-1 liquid sealing compound according to the instructions provided on its package. Carefully dispense the mixed compound into the end of the sealing chamber until the liquid level stabilizes and fills to the top.
- Clean Excess Compound
Immediately remove all excess compound material from the outside of the sealing chamber using a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners such as powder cleaners, sandpaper, steel wool, or a wire brush, as these may damage the flame path of the fitting.
- Mount Hub and Secure Assembly
Mount the hub in its desired final location. Allow the sealing compound to solidify for approximately 1 hour. Once solidified, place the encapsulated assembly into the mounted hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms out, ensuring metal-to-metal contact.
