How to Install the STX050-464SPVC Cable Fitting
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for preparing, assembling, and sealing the STX050-464SPVC Star Teck PVC cable fitting for power cables or shielded data cables. Ensure all circuits are de-energized before beginning installation.
Estimated time: 2h
Tools needed:
Hacksaw, Wire strippers, Strap wrenches, Wooden dowel
Supplies needed:
STX050-464SPVC cable fitting, SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT (purchased separately), SC65 PUTTY SEALANT (purchased separately), Lubricant, Fiber damming material (for liquid sealant), Gloves, Damp cloth
- Prepare the Cable Armor and Jacket
Determine the required working length of conductors inside the enclosure. Carefully remove a portion of the cable's outer jacket to expose the armor, then cut the armor using a hacksaw. CAUTION: Exercise caution to avoid nicking or cutting the conductor insulation. Trim the outer jacket to the specified strip length of 0.485 inches for the STX050-464PVC fitting.
- Prepare and Fit the Cable Boot
Unscrew the gland nut from the fitting body. Determine the correct cutting point for the cable boot by either forcing the square-cut cable into the boot and cutting the boot in front of the cable, or by progressively cutting slices off the boot until the opening snugly slides onto the cable armor. Apply lubricant where indicated prior to screwing the gland nut.
- Secure the Cable and Tighten Gland Nut
Feed the prepared cable through the gland nut opening and push it until the cable armor firmly hits the end stop. Tighten the gland nut to achieve an appropriate seal, or to the maximum torque of 300 IN-LBS for the STX050-464PVC fitting. Ensure the bushing seals evenly around the cable's outer jacket and the cable remains centered for an optimal seal. Use strap wrenches for PVC coated fittings.
- Disassemble for Sealing Compound Application
Disassemble the hub from the body sub-assembly by loosening the union. Then, unscrew the sealing chamber from the body sub-assembly. If installing shielded data cables, trim the inner jacket to 1/8”-3/8” to expose the shielded conductor bundle, remove the outer shield, and remove filler materials, taking care not to damage inner shields or conductors.
- Apply Sealing Compound
Choose between SC4-KIT-1 LIQUID SEALANT or SC65 PUTTY SEALANT based on your cable type (SC65 is not for shielded cables or those with 5 or more conductors including ground). Prepare the compound according to its specific instructions. For liquid, pack fiber damming material, position the fitting vertically, and fill the sealing chamber. For putty, mix thoroughly, apply around conductors to form a plug, and pack it into the chamber. CAUTION: Remove all excess compound from outside the sealing chamber with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners. WARNING: Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, when handling putty sealant.
- Final Assembly and Curing
Mount the hub in the desired location. Once the sealing compound has solidified (approximately 1 hour), place the encapsulated assembly into the hub and secure it in position by tightening the union until it bottoms (metal to metal contact). If using putty, repack compound tightly around conductors if required. Allow the compound to set for approximately one hour before disturbing conductors.
