This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET onto a service cable. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable electrical codes and safety rules to prevent electric shock.
Estimated time: 45m
Tools needed:
Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench (recommended), 5/16 inch Allen wrench OR 3/8 inch drive ratchet with Allen adapter
Supplies needed:
Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET, Service cable, Silicone grease, Compound
- Prepare the Rocket/Cap Ring
Identify the service cable size you are using. Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to expose the correct wire range for your cable.
- Prepare the Insulating Sleeve
Cut off the tip of the insulating sleeve at the arrow, ensuring that the correct cable size is visible on the sleeve.
- Strip Cable Insulation
Strip approximately 2 1/4 inches of insulation from the service cable, baring the conductor. Penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended to ease installation, but it is not required.
- Clean and Prepare Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to break up any surface oxides. Add compound and brush it into the conductor strands.
- Insert Conductor into Outlet Barrel
Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel, ensuring that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor is showing.
- Apply Grease and Slide Rocket
Wipe the cable clean. Apply the silicone grease (included in each rocket) and then slide the cut rocket over the prepared cable.
- Position Rocket Sleeve
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder until the rocket butts firmly against the connector bar.
- Tighten Setscrews to Torque
Tighten the setscrews down on the conductor to the specified torque. For #12 to #2 wire, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs). For 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). The use of a torque wrench is recommended. If not available, use a 5/16 inch allen wrench or a 3/8 inch drive ratchet with an allen adapter. Do not use a 'T' handle wrench or 1/2 inch drive.
