How to Install the Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET, ensuring a secure and flood-sealed electrical connection. WARNING: Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Torque wrench (recommended), 5/16 inch allen wrench OR 3/8 inch drive ratchet with allen adapter (if torque wrench unavailable)

Supplies needed:

Sweetheart FLOOD-SEAL Mechanical Connector CS 4197 ROCKET, Service cable, Silicone grease (included with connector), Compound

  1. Prepare the Connector for Cable Size

Identify the specific size of the service cable you are using. Cut the rocket/cap ring at the tip of the arrow to ensure only the correct wire range is showing. Subsequently, cut off the tip of the insulating sleeve at the arrow, making sure the appropriate cable size is visible on the sleeve.

  2. Prepare the Cable Conductor

Strip approximately 2 1/4 inches of insulation from the cable conductor. While not mandatory, penciling the edge of the insulation is recommended to facilitate easier installation. Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor to effectively remove any surface oxides. After brushing, add compound and work it into the conductor strands. Finally, wipe the cable clean.

  3. Apply Grease and Insert Conductor

Apply the silicone grease, which is included with each rocket connector, over the prepared cable. Carefully slide the pre-cut rocket over the greased cable. Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel of the connector, ensuring that a maximum of 1/8 inch of bare conductor remains visible.

  4. Tighten Setscrews and Seal Connection

Tighten the setscrews down onto the conductor to the specified torque: for #12 to #2 wire sizes, apply 120 in-lbs (10 ft-lbs); for 1/0 to 350 Kcmil wire sizes, apply 360 in-lbs (30 ft-lbs). A torque wrench is highly recommended for this step. If a torque wrench is not available, use a 5/16 inch allen wrench or a 3/8 inch drive ratchet with an allen adapter; avoid using a 'T' handle wrench or a 1/2 inch drive. After tightening, slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the PVC shoulder until it firmly butts against the connector bar.
