How to Install the Sweetheart "Flood-Seal" Mechanical Connector SHC 1534 Series
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the proper installation of the Sweetheart "Flood-Seal" Mechanical Connector SHC 1534 Series, including cable preparation and connection.
Estimated time: 30m
Tools needed:
Cable cutting tool, Wire strippers, Wire brush, Screwdriver, Torque wrench
Supplies needed:
Sweetheart "Flood-Seal" Mechanical Connector SHC 1534 Series, Electrical cable/conductor, Oxide inhibiting compound, Silicone grease
- Prepare the Connector Outlet
WARNING: Danger of Electric Shock! Installation of this product must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state and national electrical codes, installation standards and safety rules. Remove the insulating sleeve from the outlet. Select the correct cut-off ring for the cable being used.
- Prepare the Rocket Sleeve
Cut off the rocket sleeve at the tip of the arrow, ensuring the correct cable size is showing on the opened rocket. Refer to the provided chart for appropriate cut-off points based on wire size.
- Prepare the Conductor
Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor with compound to break up oxides. Strip the insulation from the cable according to the specified strip length for your outlet size (e.g., 3 1/2" for 500 MCM, 2 1/4" for 4/0). Penciling the insulation is preferred but not necessary. Apply silicone grease to the prepared cable.
- Install Rocket Sleeve onto Cable
Slide the cut rocket sleeve over the prepared cable.
- Insert Conductor and Secure
Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel. Tighten the set screws down on the conductor, starting with the outermost screw. Apply the specified torque: 120 in.-lbs. for #14 to #3 wire, 240 in.-lbs. for #2 to 350 MCM, and 360 in.-lbs. for 400 to 750 MCM.
- Finalize Sleeve Position
Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the outlet shoulder until the rocket butts against the connector bar.
