How to Install the Sweetheart Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 1534 SL

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for the safe and proper installation of the Sweetheart Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 1534 SL. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules to prevent danger of electric shock.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Wire brush, Cutting tool, Torque wrench, Screwdriver

Supplies needed:

Sweetheart Flood-Seal Mechanical Connector SHC 1534 SL, Electrical cable/conductor, Oxide inhibiting compound, Silicone grease

  1. Prepare the Connector Outlet

Remove the insulating sleeve from the connector outlet. Select the correct cut-off ring on the rocket sleeve that corresponds to the specific cable size you will be using.

  2. Trim the Rocket Sleeve

Cut off the rocket sleeve at the tip of the arrow that aligns with your selected cable size, ensuring that the correct cable size is clearly visible on the opened rocket.

  3. Prepare the Conductor

Thoroughly wire brush the bare conductor with an appropriate compound to break up any oxides. This ensures optimal electrical contact.

  4. Strip the Cable Insulation

Strip the insulation from the cable according to the specified strip length for your cable and outlet size. For S/L 14-4, the strip length is 0.750 inches. For Outlet Size 500, it is 3 1/2 inches, and for Outlet Size 4/0, it is 2 1/4 inches. Penciling the insulation is preferred but not strictly necessary.

  5. Apply Silicone Grease

Apply silicone grease to the prepared, bare cable conductor.

  6. Install the Cut Rocket Sleeve

Slide the trimmed rocket sleeve over the prepared cable, ensuring it is oriented correctly.

  7. Insert and Secure Conductor

Insert the prepared conductor into the outlet barrel of the connector. Tighten the set screws down on the conductor, starting with the outermost screw, to the specified torque. For #14 to #3 wire size, apply 120 in.-lbs. of torque. For #2 to 350 wire size, apply 240 in.-lbs. of torque. For 400 to 750 wire size, apply 360 in.-lbs. of torque.

  8. Finalize Rocket Sleeve Position

Slide the rocket sleeve over the outlet and onto the outlet shoulder until the rocket butts firmly against the connector bar, creating a secure seal.
