How to Install the RRK Series Radiating Rib Splice System

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the RRK Series Radiating Rib Splice System, an EPDM insulated 'Flood-Seal' connector for electrical conductors. Installation must be performed by trained installers in accordance with all applicable local, state, and national electrical codes, installation standards, and safety rules.

Estimated time: 15m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool

Supplies needed:

RRK Series connector, EPDM rubber sleeve, Electrical conductors, Grease

  1. Strip Cable Ends

Strip the ends of the electrical cables according to the following reference chart: for #2 to 2/0 cable, strip 1-1/2 inches; for 3/0 to 4/0, strip 2-1/4 inches; for 250 to 350 mcm, strip 2-1/2 inches; and for 500 mcm, strip 2-3/4 inches.

  2. Prepare EPDM Sleeve

Slide the EPDM rubber sleeve onto one of the conductors. If there is excess grease on the conductor, carefully move it to the conductor insulation for later use in step 4.

  3. Insert and Crimp Conductors

Insert the stripped ends of the conductors into the RRK Series connector. Using a crimping tool with the recommended dies marked on the connector, crimp the conductors securely. For 3/0 and 4/0 sizes, ensure you begin crimping at the designated 'BEGIN CRIMPING HERE' area and avoid the 'DO NOT CRIMP HERE!' section.

  4. Apply Excess Grease

Spread any excess grease, including any saved from step 2, evenly over the crimped connector to ensure a proper seal and aid in insulation.

  5. Seal Connection with EPDM Sleeve

Slide the EPDM rubber sleeve over the crimped connection until it locks firmly into position. Perform a visual inspection to confirm proper installation; only one 'hump' in the rubber sleeve should be visible when correctly seated.
