Overview

The Panduit SA500-2 is a tin-plated aluminum compression splice engineered for 500 kcmil conductors. Manufactured by Panduit, this connector ensures reliable electrical connections in utility, industrial, and commercial applications. Its high-strength extruded aluminum alloy body is factory pre-filled with oxide-inhibiting joint compound, effectively sealing out air and moisture to prevent surface oxidation and corrosion. This design provides a secure, low-resistance connection crucial for aluminum wiring systems. The SA500-2 is dual-rated for use with aluminum conductors and is UL Listed and CSA Certified for operation up to 600V and a temperature rating of 90°C. Its tin plating further enhances corrosion resistance, making it suitable for harsh environments. This splice minimizes inventory needs due to its wide wire range-taking capability. SKU: SA500-2. Manufacturer: Panduit. Series: Pan-Lug SA. The connector is made from a high-strength, extruded aluminum alloy, ensuring premium electrical and mechanical performance. It features clear PVC insulation, eliminating the need for taping and allowing for visual inspection of complete conductor insertion. Each port is pre-filled with oxide inhibiting joint compound to deter surface oxidation. The dual-sided entry allows for offset and opposite conductor entry, providing flexibility in installation.

How to Install Aluminum Compression Connectors

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing aluminum compression connectors safely and effectively.

Estimated time: 30m

Tools needed:

Wire strippers, Crimping tool, Heat gun or propane torch, Multimeter

Supplies needed:

Aluminum compression connectors, Heat shrink tubing, Belleville spring washers, Anti-oxidation compound, Mounting screws

  1. Prepare the wire

Strip the wire insulation to the length specified on the tool chart. Ensure not to nick or ring the conductor strands.

  2. Clean the wire

Use a wire brush to remove any oxide film from the stripped wire to ensure a good electrical connection.

  3. Insert the wire into the connector

Insert the stripped wire into the aluminum compression connector until it stops. Ensure the connector is marked for the wire size and material.

  4. Crimp the connector

Using the appropriate crimping tool, crimp the connector evenly in the crimp zone defined by the color bands or knurl markings. Follow the recommended number of crimps as per the tool chart.

  5. Inspect the crimp

After crimping, inspect the connection for sharp edges, flash, or burrs and remove any if present.

  6. Apply heat shrink tubing

Cut the heat shrink tubing to the desired length, allowing for a minimum of 1-1/2 inch overlap on the wire insulation. Shrink the tubing using a heat gun or propane torch, moving from the crimped portion toward the insulated wire.

  7. Secure the connection

For a secure bolt connection, use Belleville spring washers. Wire brush unplated mounting surfaces and coat with anti-oxidation compound. Tighten the bolt to the recommended torque requirement.
